What happens during and after Engraving?

What is the kind of customization you get from Jeld?

The process is called Laser Engraving. In which we use high powered laser beam to burn the leather. The burned leather is a permanent thing.

What happens to the leather after engraving?

The leather we use for our products is tested to give fine result for engravings. Its thick enough that the laser does not cut the leather and tough enough that the leather does not tear away when used. When leather is burned from engraving, it leaves “Ashes” on the product.
Our team makes sure that the intensity of laser is adjusted to give just the right amount power when burning the leather that it stays permanent and does not affect the usability of product in any way.

Why are the results of engraving different on every order?

Leather, like wood, is a natural medium. Just like no 2 pieces of wood can have the same properties, every sheet of leather has different and varying attributes.
For example, some leathers get black after engraving, others might give the same shade of color as the original leather even after engraving.

So what color is the engraving?

There is misconception that engraving is a coloring process. There are no inks or dyes involved. In simple terms, the top layer of leather is burned off, depending on type and tanning process of the leather, the outcomes vary. Especially with use, even engraving that was black on the first day, will eventually turn into the same color as the leather as the “Ashes” go away with time and use.

Engraving peeling off?

Two most important things in engraving are:

  • Size of the Design to be Engraved
  • Complexity of the Design to be Engraved

If a complex design is engraved on a small size, the details will get jumbled and are more likely to peel. The best way to go about it is, have a simple design engraved with a good proportion.
Not to worry, our sales and design team got you covered with the best suggestions.

What are Ashes, and how we take care of them?

The type of leather we use produces ashes when engraved, and the ashes stick to the product too. We use a couple of techniques to clean the product after its engraved.

  • Brushing it off with brushes and clothes to get all the particle sized ashes out of the leather.
  • It’s a neat little technique where we tape the engraved area and peel it off to get the remaining ash out of it.
